After sometime, Earth degraded into a festering cesspool of pollution and limited resources. For many economists and business majors had been taught a myth and that was the fixed pie analogy. A fixed pie states that there is a basic amount of capital to be gained. For example: if you produce more of a product, like a shoe. Eventually everyone will have shoes and you will be out of a job because no one needs that product anymore. The myth led to the workers despising industrial machinery that could work all day and all night, thus producing more shoes. Normally this is applied to human resources versus industrial resources. The thought was that as industrial resources improved human beings would be expendable. This would mean less people would have jobs. While this was a myth there was a fixed pie that did exist, natural resources.
However, this isn’t an analysis of the economics of Earth at its darkest hour. It is a review of the ethical transgressions that we, humans, have imposed on life forms from another world. You see it was important for Earthlings to expand their horizons. As natural resources were reaching extinction society needed to find more, more was the plague of capitalism. Now, it is important to realize that socialism doesn’t offer any benefit over capitalism. The two systems are problematic to say the least. Nevertheless, no one ever produced a societal system that would sustain the earth and allow people to be happy with nothing. We like things…
I was a member of the vanguard that was sent to investigate the benefits of creatures from other worlds. It was through this research that I realized that Earth was broken. I had hoped that my research would assist our race in progressing beyond what we have become. It was my research subject’s love that brought me to write this paper for you. I have only loved once in my life and I hope to love in the future. Nonetheless, I have committed war crimes on two planets. My hands are plastered in blood.
This will not be some piece designed to win an award. This will not carry my feelings, for I am scientist. My analysis and paper will be a quick foray into my studies. It will include the subjects influence and why they never extracted revenge upon my malleable form. For those who do not know my credentials I shall share them.
My name is Doctor Trover McHass. I graduated from Harvard in biology for my undergrad, masters, and doctorate. I was selected from a group of three thousand biologists to travel to the world of Gandraf. Many of you know this planet… probably because all of our natural resources originate from here.
You see the expedition team was tasked with a very specific goal: find resources! We had colonized the moon and mined Mars at this point. With leaps in worm-hole technology we were finally able to transport human’s too far off lands. As a race we had to do this in order to feed our incessant consumerism.
Conversely, I was sent to scan for intelligent life on other planets. It was for this reason that I joined the team. Jumping through space and defying the natural laws was exhilarating. But, it wasn’t as fantastic as learning about a true love story. As I said, I hadn’t love in my life for some time and I didn’t care. Being semi-devoid of love in my life I couldn’t believe that love could exist on such a primal level. That was until I met the Buseks. They made me want to experience another person on a metaphysical plane of existence.
The Buseks species are not normal by any means of the imagination. Their bodies were covered in thick scales. They only measured about three feet from their snout to the tip of their tail. These scales are capable of dispersing energy. Thus, the animal was capable of taking a blast from the highest level of human weaponry. In order to capture them we had to become creative.
Nonetheless, I have gotten ahead of myself. None of you living in luxury have had the pleasure of meeting such a majestic creature. Their heads were long and laced with razor sharp teeth. They had thumbs, but at the tip of their fingers were razor sharp claws. These claws constantly grew like a cat. If I had to liken them to anything that originated on earth it would be dragon, for they also had wings. The wings were purposeful for flight. However, when observed in their natural habitat they were more often used for an intimate embrace.
Upon landing on Grandraf I began my exploration of the native life forms. The life forms represented various animals from Earth. Nevertheless, there were some differences. A chicken like animal had greeted us when we first arrived. However, we quickly found they were poisonous. This fact was learned when a worker tried to pan fry their meat. For this animal, when heat was applied to its dead flesh, toxic smoke would be released. At this point we began to proceed with caution. That was until we met a pack of Buseks.
We first encountered this creature when we were in a set of hills outside of a forest. There weren’t many trees on the hills so our visibility was at an all-time high. We were able to investigate many animals as they came in and out of the tree line. When we saw a dragon like animal most of the staff became highly interested and tried to catch them. It was a dream! Dragons did exist.
On the first approach we learned they weren’t sophomoric. They understood what was happening and appeared to have a societal structure. Some of the staff had approached them with energy rifles. Immediately, the creature assumed an attack formation and the non-warrior types fled into the forest. When our employees saw this aggression they immediately called for the Marines that had accompanied us. It looked like it would end up being a bloody conflict. Nevertheless, the beasts were superior to our weapons in every way. When the blasts of liquefied plasma hit their scales it was dispersed and absorbed. That absorbed energy was so potent that they couldn’t hold it in their bodies. Thus, they released it. At the time we assumed this was them attacking us, rather, it was them trying to survive. It was like them purging a poison that was coursing through their body.
That day we lost five soldiers to the maelstrom of energy that erupted from the Busek’s mouth. This destructive force obliterated the flesh of human beings. In my first report I claimed that the animal was highly aggressive and could unleash an unholy weapon on human beings. What I failed to realize was that our weapons caused the devastation to our species. The Buseks exist in a natural state of peace. While they may be fierce, they rarely resort to violence. My first report is what led us to be inhumane. The experimentation has rocked my soul to its very core. I will never be able to absolve myself of the sin I created with that report.
Nonetheless, my report led us down a path of investigating the Buseks. Many people thought they could be our enemy. In order to qualm these misgivings I was tasked with collecting some samples for study at our Lunar Laboratory. The wild animal was easy to capture after some investigations into their behavior. I was able to attain this data after we placed a ban on approaching them.
Their behavior is similar to the wolves that went extinct a hundred of years ago. There was a pack and an alpha. The alpha was never determined by gender. Inside of each pack was a group of strong individuals. They were a mix of the sexes. There appeared to be no sexism in their culture. The soldiers would never attack, they were strictly defensive. Their goal was to allow the others to escape while fending off threats. They would have been an apex predator but were oddly vegetarian. However, the rest of the group was gentile and calm. It was the non-warrior class that I decided would be easy to capture for study.
The expedition members hatched a scheme. In order to capture some specimens we needed to draw off the soldier caste. We had seen a confrontation at one time. A single Busek tore a pack of wolves to shreds in order to defend their young. The last thing we wanted was a ball of talons and scales tearing into our bodies. Thus, we needed to capture the young. Young Buseks didn’t have talons and relied on their parents for food. Therefore, they were the perfect target.
If I had known what I now know, I never would have taken the young. I won’t get into the details of the capture for that isn’t important. Instead I will give some insight into how the creatures mate. Biologically they have the same sexual organs as humans. The only difference is that the young find their mate within their first year of life. This happens before they are sexually mature.
It was explained to me by one of the subjects, “We choose our future mate at a young age from a different pack. From the moment we meet there is no one else. We only want to speak and learn from them. This is how we exist. It is not based on looks or best logical choice. It is about transforming from two into one and when one of us dies the other passes away immediately.”
At the time of capture, two different sects of the species were meeting to see if their young had the “spark”. The two research subjects couldn’t provide any insight into what created an attraction between two of their kind. What was known was the distance of travel. The male’s family had traveled from the southern continent. His scales were white due to the snowy environment he grew up in. This distance was the same as traveling from Alaska to Mexico. Buseks travel this far because of their unfortunate fate. After a year – the year on the planet was 670 days – the young died. Unless they found their true love because life was not worth living without someone special.
This imminent threat of death made groups travel constantly. Normally a lover was found nearby. It became evident that my research subject wasn’t normal. He stood before various females. None of them produced any feelings until he had arrived in the North.
He explained to me, “It wasn’t an immediate connection. I did not fall for her and need her with me at all times. However, I developed an interest in her thoughts. I wanted to learn about her, to fly besides her, and be away from everyone so we could be alone. She felt the same. That was the spark our elders speak of.”
He later explained why all our other research subjects passed away. They could only live as long as they were close enough to communicate with their lovers. Now close is a relative term so I must expand on their communication. It was telepathic. Anywhere on the planet they would be able to speak with one another. Therefore, the male would return to the south and speak with his future mate. They wouldn’t see each other for about four years – roughly seven human years. That entire time they would only speak with one another. Completely engrained with what the other was doing. This strong attraction was how they continued to live.
Thus, when we traveled back to the Lunar Base all other Buseks connection to their lovers was severed. The only two that survived were the two that had just formed a bond with one another. We had captured a pair of lovers. It was their strength and love for one another that kept them alive. They were separated from each other and put through various tests. Since they communicated without their words they had never developed vocal cords. They never screamed while poked and prodded.
For seven years I manipulated their bodies and tested different pieces of them for practical applications for the human race. Their scales helped produce new technology. A piece of equipment that could solve the energy crisis that grip Earth on a regular basis: a single scale could transmit energy between other scales. I found a way to drop a scale into the sun and transmit that energy anywhere in our solar system. That was ten years ago… since then no one has implemented the device. I was blocked by the greed that clouds our judgment. Free energy makes no money so no one wanted it.
It was after my disheartening last days at the research lab that they reached out to me, “Can you please take me to see my wife?”
That day has been etched in my mind. I spun in my chair and looked around the room. There was nothing there except for the male Busek. His blue eyes stared into my soul. I did a double take and assumed I was going insane so I turned back and began writing my resignation letter. The ink from my red fountain pen had left a pool of blackness.
“Before you resign, can you use your power to let me see my wife? I have been beside you for the last four years” Four Grandraf years, seven human years, “and watched you struggle with bureaucracy. I understand you are leaving and your reasons are noble.”
At that time I was resigning because I wanted to return the Buseks to their home world. I never planned on keeping them from their environment for such a long time. The goal had been to monitor them for a couple of months then return them to the wild. Nevertheless, management wanted me to continue working with them. For seven years I constantly pleaded. Nonetheless, all my pleas fell on deaf ears and were returned with threats of being blacklisted. Unlike the research subjects I needed money to live in my society, so I ignored what my heart told me to do.
This time I looked back at the cage and spoke, “I think I am going senile… I hear a voice and no one is here.” A light giggle escaped my thin lips as ink continued to pour out of my pen.
“Senile? No you are hearing your captive. In the last four years I never asked for anything. I am asking for something now. Will you comply with my wishes?”
I didn’t need anything in return. The majestic being had given me so much already, “Consider it done.”
So I went and got the female from the other side of the facility. I concocted lies and coated a few pockets. In about four hours I had them both in the same room. It was at that time I saw just how physically capable they were. In a moment their eyes met and both of them shattered the metal cages that constrained them.
Instead of killing me they embraced and their wings wrapped around one another’s bodies. They had the same color eyes and it was a beautiful thing to witness. Her soft green scales disappeared as his white wings caressed her body.
“Thank you.” I only nodded as the female voice replaced my own thoughts.
“You have brought my love to my side. For that I have absolved you of your sins. If we ever get back to Gandraf we will explain that you were a friend to us.”
I swallowed a lump in my throat, “Grandraf has been mostly mined. Only a few continents are untouched. Your planet will soon be gone.” At that point their embrace ended and they stared at me.
“Why do your people need our world?”
“We needed the oil. The oil is fundamental to our energy needs. You had large reservoirs.”
“You used the scales your researchers tore from our bodies. Those scales proved that you could exist without our world’s natural resource.”
“No one wanted to convert everything to a different form of energy. Instead it was seen as cheaper to take what we needed from you. It also gives human beings jobs” I started wiping my brow.
“And kills our kin.”
I had to sigh, “We didn’t know you were intelligent. Now we do, we can plead with the countries of Earth.”
The white winged Busek walked forward, “I will speak with your leaders and explain that we cannot have this. I will plead with them to leave my world. I will give you my life if that will help.”
Many of you know what happened next. I took the two creatures that had fully matured down to Earth and introduced them to the United Nations assembly. Here I acted as a medium for the animal. I had become linked with the two lovers from another world. They were able to speak to me and I then spoke to the citizens of our fair planet.
I assumed that the speech had been well received. We were promised certain concessions. Specifically that the mining trips to Gandraf would stop. It appears that was too much to ask for and there was no more progress. After a year I watched as trips continued and mining on the foreign planet was expanded. I tried discourse one more time on behalf of the intelligent animals that we were destroying. I had been blessed with being incorporated with the two Busek’s family. The love and care, their ability to forgive was immense. They never grew angry and instead relished in being together with their lover. Their love was pure and it conquered all. Except for us.
I came before the general assembly and requested that we allowed them to return home. I explained that their offspring would die in about two years if we didn’t let them start the process of introductions. While I pled the family stood beside me and never made an aggressive move. None of you who watched that broadcast saw what happened afterword. As the cameras shut off and we moved to leave my research came back to haunt me. I had explained how to kill a Busek in order to help us defend ourselves on Gandraf. That knowledge assisted us in our first galactic assassination of a diplomat and the resulting death of his wife.
As her tears cascaded onto her dying husband’s body she called to me, “Save our children!”
When I escaped I looked over my shoulder and gazed as she clutched her heart. She passed from our cruel world without any sort of memorial. She never once raised her claws against us. Yet, the media was forced to paint them as aggressive towards humans. Those two forgave us long ago, and that was when I took up arms and created the organization: Love’s Warriors.
Since that day I have successfully returned their offspring to their world. I gave them my research so they could extract their revenge on us if they wanted too. Nonetheless, I learned that forgiveness is their primary state of existence. In seven years of torturous research they never tried to take my life and forgave me.
It is their races ability to forgive that let them and their world be bastardized for our incessant needs. No more. As you have heard and seen I have destroyed the Lunar Base. This base is required for travel to Gandraf. I also have systematically waged war on all space ports with the help of my followers. It is time we learned from the Buseks. They were designed to be an apex predator. Instead they eat leaves and flowers. It is time we stop eating our world and focus on something else, like love.
