State of my Writing: Current Catalogue of Writing

Posted by on Jul 7, 2017 in Blog Posts, Manuscripts, Project's Progress Update, Short Story | 0 comments

My friend began a project over 200 days ago.  His goal is to write a blog post a day about an album he has never listened to before.  Which means, he has listened to over 200 albums and written over 200 blog posts this year alone.  After he cleared that goal, I thought to myself: what are the number of projects I’ve completed.  Fun fact, I haven’t posted up about some of my projects: the screen play I wrote with two of my friends (one being the person who is doing the album blog I mentioned above, we call ourselves the Three Idiots), and a podcast thing (my co-host is also the person who is writing the blog on albums, the occasional guest is the third idiot from the screenplay) we are building a backlog (we haven’t released any yet).  So at the time, I have manuscripts, short stories, a podcast, and screenplay.  Furthermore, I sometimes get down on myself because I have a lot of things that have been cooked but not sold (aka everything).  So, today, I am taking this blog post to flaunt my output (some things are works in progress, and a lot of them are in a forever state of revisions but being submitted to places).

Below, the total amount of words sums to 627,957 sans the blog posts (all word counts taken at the point of writing this blog – manuscripts, short stories not on the website, and short stories on the website).

A Week of Productivity

Posted by on Sep 11, 2016 in Blog Posts, Short Story | 0 comments

Over the last seven days, I’ve written three short stories that comes to a total of roughly 15,000 words.  Some of these have working titles, but the three pieces are: Two Brains ~7,000 words, Filling Gaps 3,399 exactly (it is for a competition that only allows 3,400 words), and Multiplying Secrets ~5,000 words.  All three are different than my traditional short fiction, due to the fact that I applied my manuscript writing style to them.  This means, each one was heavily outlined, had a specific flow, and had research behind it.  A traditional short story for me was a way to workout different mechanisms, technique, and narration to better my manuscripts.  After four years of writing short stories with their goal of being experimentation, I have decided to apply what I’ve learned to the next batch and see what I can get published.  All three are strong and have been sent out to trusted sources for review.  One, Two Brains, is actually in the universe of my some of my manuscripts and is mostly prepped to be sent to a magazine.  The other two are still going through the “chute” to be reviewed, commented on, and edited.

Similarities

Posted by on Jun 22, 2015 in Blog Posts, New Short Story | Fiction, Short Story | 0 comments

It is about time that I focused on another short story.  This time, I have chosen SimilaritiesSimilarities is a piece that was designed around trying to write two separate narrators in a single piece.  What I wanted was two points of view that were third person and describing two separate events.  The experiment here would eventually go on and be fully fleshed out in Death by Comedy – my fifth manuscript – where I use five narrators to tell a story.  While the voices in this piece are very similar, Death by Comedy experiences five unique voices with five completely different backgrounds.  In this piece, there is also an underlying criticism which is explained below.

Redirect

Today, I will be highlighting RedirectI remember working on this piece because the piece just didn’t seem possible.  It took three rewrites to get it to where it is on the website, and I am not even sure if it truly does what it needs to do for the reader.  Personally, after rereading it, I think it hit home more than I originally thought.  Sometimes, my shorty work appears preachy to me, and I wanted this to be more subtle – I don’t think I hit the subtle parts very well.  However, there is some throwbacks to other works and naming styles.  For more info on the piece, continue reading but it will be semi full of spoilers.  I suggest you read the piece then check out the explanation: Click me for Redirect.

House of Bourbon

House of Bourbon

House of Bourbon was the first of my experimental pieces.  The following chronological piece – which is still in review for a contest – Three Pills, took what I was testing in this piece to the next level.  All of the work in House of Bourbon and Three Pills became vital to me during Tesla’s Travels, where I utilized what I had learned through these pieces to drive home a fundamental sub plot of the manuscript.  I don’t want to give much away, so here is the link: House of Bourbon.  If you are interested in more details about the piece, continue reading, but you need to understand that the following is full of explanation.

Three “New” Flash Fiction Pieces

Three “New” Flash Fiction Pieces

Oh happy days!  There are three new short stories – flash fiction – available on the website.  These additions were part of a contest with the Harvard Book Store and were written in a single sitting.  I have my personal favorite, but I will not share which one that is with you.  As I have been busy, I am hoping to take sometime soon to deploy a massive backlog of short stories (most of which I find lacking my newest style).  Either way, please enjoy the new pieces in the flash fiction section.  The three new pieces are: Please, Don’t Recycle, A Little Vanilla, and Family Matters.  Is it my best work?  No idea, I am a novelist who writes short stories for practice and experimentation.  I enjoy them; I hope you do too.
